How to Create Your Own Cryptocurrency Using Python 2020

A blockchain is a public database that irreversibly documents and authenticates the possession and transmission of digital assets. Digital currencies, like Bitcoin and Ethereum, are based on this concept. Blockchain is an exciting technology that you can use to transform the capabilities of your applications.
Of late, we’ve been seeing governments, organizations, and individuals using the blockchain technology to create their own cryptocurrencies—and avoid being left behind. Notably, when Facebook proposed its own cryptocurrency, called Libra, the announcement stirred many waters across the world.

What if you could also follow suit and create your own version of a cryptocurrency?

I thought about this and decided to develop an algorithm that creates a crypto.
I decided to call the cryptocurrency fccCoin.
In this tutorial, I’m going to illustrate the step-by-step process I used to build the digital currency (I used the object-oriented concepts of the Python programming language).
Here is the basic blueprint of the blockchain algorithm for creating the fccCoin:

Now, let me explain what is taking place…
1. Building the first Block class A blockchain comprises of several blocks that are joined to each other (that sounds familiar, right?).
The chaining of blocks takes place such that if one block is tampered with, the rest of the chain becomes invalid.
In applying the above concept, I created the following initial block class

As you can see from the code above, I defined the __init__() function, which will be executed when the Block class is being initiated, just like in any other Python class.
I provided the following parameters to the initiation function:
self—this refers to the instance of the Block class, making it possible to access the methods and attributes associated with the class; index—this keeps track of the position of the block within the blockchain; proof_no—this is the number produced during the creation of a new block (called mining); prev_hash—this refers to the hash of the previous block within the chain; data—this gives a record of all transactions completed, such as the quantity bought; timestamp—this places a timestamp for the transactions. The second method in the class, calculate_hash, will generate the hash of the blocks using the above values. The SHA-256 module is imported into the project to assist in obtaining the hashes of the blocks.
After the values have been inputted into the cryptographic hash algorithm, the function will return a 256-bit string representing the contents of the block.
This is how security is achieved in blockchains—every block will have a hash and that hash will rely on the hash of the previous block.
As such, if someone tries to compromise any block in the chain, the other blocks will have invalid hashes, leading to disruption of the entire blockchain network.
Ultimately, a block will look like this:

2. Building the Blockchain class The main idea of a blockchain, just as the name implies, involves “chaining” several blocks to one another.
Therefore, I’m going to construct a Blockchain class that will be useful in managing the workings of the whole chain. This is where most of the action is going to take place.
The Blockchain class will have various helper methods for completing various tasks in the blockchain.
Let me explain the role of each of the methods in the class.
a. Constructor method This method ensures the blockchain is instantiated.

Here are the roles of its attributes:
b. Constructing the genesis block The blockchain requires a construct_genesis method to build the initial block in the chain. In the blockchain convention, this block is special because it symbolizes the start of the blockchain.
In this case, let’s construct it by simply passing some default values to the construct_block method.
I gave both proof_no and prev_hash a value of zero, although you can provide any value you want.

d. Checking validity
The check_validity method is important in assessing the integrity of the blockchain and ensuring anomalies are absent.
As mentioned earlier, hashes are essential for the security of the blockchain as even the slightest change in the object will lead to the generation of a completely new hash.
Therefore, this check_validity method uses if statements to check whether the hash of every block is correct.
It also verifies if every block points to the right previous block, through comparing the value of their hashes. If everything is correct, it returns true; otherwise, it returns false.

e. Adding data of transactions
The new_data method is used for adding the data of transactions to a block. It’s a very simple method: it accepts three parameters (sender’s details, receiver’s details, and quantity) and append the transaction data to self.current_data list.
Anytime a new block is created, this list is allocated to that block and reset once more as explained in the construct_block method.
Once the transaction data has been added to the list, the index of the next block to be created is returned.
This index is calculated by adding 1 to the index of the current block (which is the last in the blockchain). The data will assist a user in submitting the transaction in future.

The funds are not locked in any way; however, if enough of the funds are moved or spent to cause the user’s holdings to drop below 10,000 Wolfcoin, the associated masternode will go offline and stop receiving rewards.

A Beginners Guide to Bitcoin, Blockchain & Cryptocurrency

As cryptocurrency, and blockchain technology become more abundant throughout our society, it’s important to understand the inner workings of this technology, especially if you plan to use cryptocurrency as an investment vehicle. If you’re new to the crypto-sphere, learning about Bitcoin makes it much easier to understand other cryptocurrencies as many other altcoins' technologies are borrowed directly from Bitcoin.
Bitcoin is one of those things that you look into only to discover you have more questions than answers, and right as you’re starting to wrap your head around the technology; you discover the fact that Bitcoin has six other variants (forks), the amount of politics at hand, or that there are over a thousand different cryptocurrencies just as complex if not even more complex than Bitcoin.
We are currently in the infancy of blockchain technology and the effects of this technology will be as profound as the internet. This isn’t something that’s just going to fade away into history as you may have been led to believe. I believe this is something that will become an integral part of our society, eventually embedded within our technology. If you’re a crypto-newbie, be glad that you're relatively early to the industry. I hope this post will put you on the fast-track to understanding Bitcoin, blockchain, and how a large percentage of cryptocurrencies work.

Community Terminology

Altcoin: Short for alternative coin. There are over 1,000 different cryptocurrencies. You’re probably most familiar with Bitcoin. Anything that isn’t Bitcoin is generally referred to as an altcoin.
HODL: Misspelling of hold. Dank meme accidentally started by this dude. Hodlers are much more interested in long term gains rather than playing the risky game of trying to time the market.
TO THE MOON: When a cryptocurrency’s price rapidly increases. A major price spike of over 1,000% can look like it’s blasting off to the moon. Just be sure you’re wearing your seatbelt when it comes crashing down.
FUD: Fear. Uncertainty. Doubt.
FOMO: Fear of missing out.
Bull Run: Financial term used to describe a rising market.
Bear Run: Financial term used to describe a falling market.

What Is Bitcoin?

Bitcoin (BTC) is a decentralized digital currency that uses cryptography to secure and ensure validity of transactions within the network. Hence the term crypto-currency. Decentralization is a key aspect of Bitcoin. There is no CEO of Bitcoin or central authoritative government in control of the currency. The currency is ran and operated by the people, for the people. One of the main development teams behind Bitcoin is blockstream.
Bitcoin is a product of blockchain technology. Blockchain is what allows for the security and decentralization of Bitcoin. To understand Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, you must understand to some degree, blockchain. This can get extremely technical the further down the rabbit hole you go, and because this is technically a beginners guide, I’m going to try and simplify to the best of my ability and provide resources for further technical reading.

A Brief History

Bitcoin was created by Satoshi Nakamoto. The identity of Nakamoto is unknown. The idea of Bitcoin was first introduced in 2008 when Nakamoto released the Bitcoin white paper - Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System. Later, in January 2009, Nakamoto announced the Bitcoin software and the Bitcoin network officially began.
I should also mention that the smallest unit of a Bitcoin is called a Satoshi. 1 BTC = 100,000,000 Satoshis. When purchasing Bitcoin, you don’t actually need to purchase an entire coin. Bitcoin is divisible, so you can purchase any amount greater than 1 Satoshi (0.00000001 BTC).

What Is Blockchain?

Blockchain is a distributed ledger, a distributed collection of accounts. What is being accounted for depends on the use-case of the blockchain itself. In the case of Bitcoin, what is being accounted for is financial transactions.
The first block in a blockchain is referred to as the genesis block. A block is an aggregate of data. Blocks are also discovered through a process known as mining (more on this later). Each block is cryptographically signed by the previous block in the chain and visualizing this would look something akin to a chain of blocks, hence the term, blockchain.

What is Bitcoin Mining

Bitcoin mining is one solution to the double spend problem. Bitcoin mining is how transactions are placed into blocks and added onto the blockchain. This is done to ensure proof of work, where computational power is staked in order to solve what is essentially a puzzle. If you solve the puzzle correctly, you are rewarded Bitcoin in the form of transaction fees, and the predetermined block reward. The Bitcoin given during a block reward is also the only way new Bitcoin can be introduced into the economy. With a halving event occurring roughly every 4 years, it is estimated that the last Bitcoin block will be mined in the year 2,140. (See What is Block Reward below for more info).
Mining is one of those aspects of Bitcoin that can get extremely technical and more complicated the further down the rabbit hole you go. An entire website could be created (and many have) dedicated solely to information regarding Bitcoin mining. The small paragraph above is meant to briefly expose you to the function of mining and the role it plays within the ecosystem. It doesn’t even scratch the surface regarding the topic.

How do you Purchase Bitcoin?

The most popular way to purchase Bitcoin through is through an online exchange where you trade fiat (your national currency) for Bitcoin.
Popular exchanges include:
  • Coinbase
  • Kraken
  • Cex
  • Gemini
There’s tons of different exchanges. Just make sure you find one that supports your national currency.

Volatility

Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies are EXTREMELY volatile. Swings of 30% or more within a few days is not unheard of. Understand that there is always inherent risks with any investment. Cryptocurrencies especially. Only invest what you’re willing to lose.

Transaction & Network Fees

Transacting on the Bitcoin network is not free. Every purchase or transfer of Bitcoin will cost X amount of BTC depending on how congested the network is. These fees are given to miners as apart of the block reward.
Late 2017 when Bitcoin got up to $20,000USD, the average network fee was ~$50. Currently, at the time of writing this, the average network fee is $1.46. This data is available in real-time on BitInfoCharts.

Security

In this new era of money, there is no central bank or government you can go to in need of assistance. This means the responsibility of your money falls 100% into your hands. That being said, the security regarding your cryptocurrency should be impeccable. The anonymity provided by cryptocurrencies alone makes you a valuable target to hackers and scammers. Below I’ve detailed out best practices regarding securing your cryptocurrency.

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Two-factor authentication is a second way of authenticating your identity upon signing in to an account. Most cryptocurrency related software/websites will offer or require some form of 2FA. Upon creation of any crypto-related account find the Security section and enable 2FA.

SMS Authentication

The most basic form of 2FA which you are probably most familiar with. This form of authentication sends a text message to your smartphone with a special code that will allow access to your account upon entry. Note that this is not the safest form of 2FA as you may still be vulnerable to what is known as a SIM swap attack. SIM swapping is a social engineering method in which an attacker will call up your phone carrier, impersonating you, in attempt to re-activate your SIM card on his/her device. Once the attacker has access to your SIM card he/she now has access to your text messages which can then be used to access your online accounts. You can prevent this by using an authenticator such as Google Authenticator.

Authenticator

The use of an authenticator is the safest form of 2FA. An authenticator is installed on a seperate device and enabling it requires you input an ever changing six digit code in order to access your account. I recommend using Google Authenticator.
If a website has the option to enable an authenticator, it will give you a QR code and secret key. Use Google Authenticator to scan the QR code. The secret key consists of a random string of numbers and letters. Write this down on a seperate sheet of paper and do not store it on a digital device.
Once Google Authenticator has been enabled, every time you sign into your account, you will have to input a six-digit code that looks similar to this. If you happen to lose or damage the device you have Google Authenticator installed on, you will be locked out of your account UNLESS you have access to the secret key (which you should have written down).

Hardware Wallets

A wallet is what you store Bitcoin and cryptocurrency on. I’ll provide resources on the different type of wallets later but I want to emphasize the use of a hardware wallet (aka cold storage).
Hardware wallets are the safest way of storing cryptocurrency because it allows for your crypto to be kept offline in a physical device. After purchasing crypto via an exchange, I recommend transferring it to cold storage. The most popular hardware wallets include the Ledger Nano S, and Trezor.
Hardware wallets come with a special key so that if it gets lost or damaged, you can recover your crypto. I recommend keeping your recovery key as well as any other sensitive information in a safety deposit box.
I know this all may seem a bit manic, but it is important you take the necessary security precautions in order to ensure the safety & longevity of your cryptocurrency.

What is a Bitcoin Address?

A Bitcoin address is what you send Bitcoin to. If you want to receive Bitcoin you’d give someone your Bitcoin address. Think of a Bitcoin address as an email address for money.

What is a Bitcoin Wallet?

As the title implies, a Bitcoin wallet is anything that can store Bitcoin. There are many different types of wallets including paper wallets, software wallets and hardware wallets. It is generally advised NOT to keep cryptocurrency on an exchange, as exchanges are prone to hacks (see Mt. Gox hack).
My preferred method of storing cryptocurrency is using a hardware wallet such as the Ledger Nano S or Trezor. These allow you to keep your crypto offline in physical form and as a result, much more safe from hacks. Paper wallets also allow for this but have less functionality in my opinion.
After I make crypto purchases, I transfer it to my Ledger Nano S and keep that in a safe at home. Hardware wallets also come with a special key so that if it gets lost or damaged, you can recover your crypto. I recommend keeping your recovery key in a safety deposit box.

What is Bitcoins Max Supply?

The max supply of Bitcoin is 21 million. The only way new Bitcoins can be introduced into the economy are through block rewards which are given after successfully mining a block (more on this later).

What is Bitcoins Block Time?

The average time in which blocks are created is called block time. For Bitcoin, the block time is ~10 minutes, meaning, 10 minutes is the minimum amount of time it will take for a Bitcoin transaction to be processed. Note that transactions on the Bitcoin network can take much longer depending on how congested the network is. Having to wait a few hours or even a few days in some instances for a transaction to clear is not unheard of.
Other cryptocurrencies will have different block times. For example, Ethereum has a block time of ~15 seconds.

What is Bitcoins Block Size?

There is a limit to how large blocks can be. In the early days of Bitcoin, the block size was 36MB, but in 2010 this was reduced to 1 MB in order to prevent distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS), spam, and other malicious use on the blockchain. Nowadays, blocks are routinely in excess of 1MB, with the largest to date being somewhere around 2.1 MB.
There is much debate amongst the community on whether or not to increase Bitcoin’s block size limit to account for ever-increasing network demand. A larger block size would allow for more transactions to be processed. The con argument to this is that decentralization would be at risk as mining would become more centralized. As a result of this debate, on August 1, 2017, Bitcoin underwent a hard-fork and Bitcoin Cash was created which has a block size limit of 8 MB. Note that these are two completely different blockchains and sending Bitcoin to a Bitcoin Cash wallet (or vice versa) will result in a failed transaction.
Update: As of May 15th, 2018 Bitcoin Cash underwent another hard fork and the block size has increased to 32 MB.
On the topic of Bitcoin vs Bitcoin Cash and which cryptocurrency is better, I’ll let you do your own research and make that decision for yourself. It is good to know that this is a debated topic within the community and example of the politics that manifest within the space. Now if you see community members arguing about this topic, you’ll at least have a bit of background to the issue.

What is Block Reward?

Block reward is the BTC you receive after discovering a block. Blocks are discovered through a process called mining. The only way new BTC can be added to the economy is through block rewards and the block reward is halved every 210,000 blocks (approximately every 4 years). Halving events are done to limit the supply of Bitcoin. At the inception of Bitcoin, the block reward was 50BTC. At the time of writing this, the block reward is 12.5BTC. Halving events will continue to occur until the amount of new Bitcoin introduced into the economy becomes less than 1 Satoshi. This is expected to happen around the year 2,140. All 21 million Bitcoins will have been mined. Once all Bitcoins have been mined, the block reward will only consist of transaction fees.

Understanding Nodes

Any computer that connects to the Bitcoin network is called a node. Nodes that fully verify all of the rules of Bitcoin are called full nodes.
In other words, full nodes are what verify the Bitcoin blockchain and they play a crucial role in maintaining the decentralized network. Full nodes store the entirety of the blockchain and validate transactions. Anyone can participate in the Bitcoin network and run a full node. Bitcoin.org has information on how to set up a full node. Running a full node also gives you wallet capabilities and the ability to query the blockchain.

What is a Fork?

A fork is a divergence in a blockchain. Since Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer network, there’s an overall set of rules (protocol) in which participants within the network must abide by. These rules are put in place to form network consensus. Forks occur when implementations must be made to the blockchain or if there is disagreement amongst the network on how consensus should be achieved.

Soft Fork vs Hard Fork

The difference between soft and hard forks lies in compatibility. Soft forks are backwards compatible, hard forks are not. Think of soft forks as software upgrades to the blockchain, whereas hard forks are a software upgrade that warrant a completely new blockchain.
During a soft fork, miners and nodes upgrade their software to support new consensus rules. Nodes that do not upgrade will still accept the new blockchain.
Examples of Bitcoin soft forks include:
A hard fork can be thought of as the creation of a new blockchain that X percentage of the community decides to migrate too. During a hard fork, miners and nodes upgrade their software to support new consensus rules, Nodes that do not upgrade are invalid and cannot accept the new blockchain.
Examples of Bitcoin hard forks include:
  • Bitcoin Cash
  • Bitcoin Gold
Note that these are completely different blockchains and independent from the Bitcoin blockchain. If you try to send Bitcoin to one of these blockchains, the transaction will fail.

A Case For Bitcoin in a World of Centralization

Our current financial system is centralized, which means the ledger(s) that operate within this centralized system are subjugated to control, manipulation, fraud, and many other negative aspects that come with this system. There are also pros that come with a centralized system, such as the ability to swiftly make decisions. However, at some point, the cons outweigh the pros, and change is needed. What makes Bitcoin so special as opposed to our current financial system is that Bitcoin allows for the decentralized transfer of money. Not one person owns the Bitcoin network, everybody does. Not one person controls Bitcoin, everybody does. A decentralized system in theory removes much of the baggage that comes with a centralized system. Not to say the Bitcoin network doesn’t have its problems (wink wink it does), and there’s much debate amongst the community as to how to go about solving these issues. But even tiny steps are significant steps in the world of blockchain, and I believe Bitcoin will ultimately help to democratize our financial system, whether or not you believe it is here to stay for good.

By using cryptography to control the creation and tracking of a digital currency, Nakamoto took that power away from central authorities like governments.
Bitcoin was the first and most famous digital currency, but you can choose from more than 1,500, including ether, litecoin and even cryptokitties. For awhile, you saw these currencies only in the darkest corners of the internet, where people used them for all sorts of questionable, even illegal, activities. Drug dealers liked them because they made transactions all but invisible, and trolls at the Kremlin-backed Internet Research Agency used bitcoin to finance their campaign to influence the 2016 election.
That started to change in 2014, when Overstock became the first major US retailer to accept bitcoin. Companies like Expedia and Microsoft followed suit.
One of the biggest misconceptions about cryptocurrencies is that you need thousands of dollars to invest. Questions from a newbie. And newbie suggestions on increasing utilization and appeal.

Hey Everyone,
I own a couple XZC and I've been casually watching it come along for the last 6 months but I still regard myself as a total newbie. But with my day job, and night job, and only a little time to read about crypto, I miss a lot of the information and updates in the process.
The ultimate goal I believe is mass adoption. And while I know 10x more than cryptocurrency than the average person I still don't know shit compared to someone that's mining, or setting up a znode.
First, it would be great if the ZCoin website were geared towards explaining the benefits of privacy, and how the zcoin can be used. Right now, even the FAQ is positioned towards someone that knows a lot about cryptocurrency and is familiar with the other leading players.
Like some basic HOW-TO tutorials.
"How to buy and sell online with complete anonymity."
Step 1: Set up your zcoin wallet (If you don't know what a zcoin wallet is, read this tutorial).
Step 2: ????????
What if I want anonymity for all of my online activity regarding cryptocurrency? Can I use Zcoin to accomplish that?
I assume so? Buy Zcoin on an exchange. Send Zcoin to Zcoin wallet. Mint & send new zcoin to a separate wallet. Now send that zcoin to a new private wallet. Exchange that zcoin for Ether on EtherDelta. Use that Ether to buy other coins and send to a private wallet? Is this correct? I don't know. Wish there was a tutorial. I know if I try to figure it out I'm going to screw it up or leave a trail.
Anyways. I get that there are huge benefits to privacy. But the logistics to achieving that privacy overwhelm me.
Again. I've been casually following cryptocurrency for about 6 months and aside from buying/selling on an exchange, I have not achieved any practical usage of the coins (even though I want to) because I find it all rather confusing.
So, guides that walk a complete newbie through how to accomplish things a newbie might want to do would be helpful. In my mind that would increase utilization and growth.
Maybe all of this stuff exists on the sites, in the forums, in the blogs, or on twitter posts. However, mass customer adoption is going to come from making that info well organized and easy to locate, especially on the main website.
In my mind, the website should lead with topics on the home page such as:
"How to use Zcoin to maintain your online privacy"
"Why do standard Coins (Including bitcoin) fail at privacy?"
"What is a privacy coin?"
"Why is Zcoin better than the alternative "privacy" coins"
Right now, the home page leads with "download our wallet" and "In order to solve the “double spending problem”, all transactions on Bitcoin must be stored on a public ledger." The average person WANTS online privacy. The average person DOES NOT WANT to learn and understand what a public ledger is. Double Spending is an issue only someone familiar with privacy coins are going to know.
Anyways. This is all meant to be constructive criticism from the perspective of getting more people familiar with the coin and utilizing it. I would be happy to assist with some of this content creation for the site... if you can first help a newbie understand it.

Should I invest in Bitcoin?

When I first noticed Bitcoin, it was hovering around $11 in 2012. I tried to start mining, but quickly realized my Macbook Pro’s processing power wasn’t sufficient to justify the time and energy it would take to get up and running. I never mined a single Bitcoin, but I did quite a bit of research.
I rapidly read articles on Bitcoin, its past and its future.
I watched tutorials on how to mine Bitcoin and the mechanics of its payout system.
I browsed all the major forums, for opinions from Bitcoin owners.
This isn’t me trying to brag about my foresight in spotting Bitcoin before it became big. As a technology enthusiast, this was just one of the many tech crazes I explored. Many of these failed quietly or haven’t yet satisfied the hype (3D printing).
If there was one consensus among Bitcoin owners in 2012, it was that they truly believed in Bitcoin. Enthusiasts foresaw the potential revolutionary impact of a de-centralized currency. Libertarians hoped for an end to the monopoly of the dollar. Despite its problems, the future looked bright, and early adopters invested on that premise.
Today, many purchase BTC with no basis other than the gargantuan number beside the ticker and an exponential price chart. With every sharp increase, more and more speculators purchase BTC, with nothing but a hunch as vindication. Answers appear on Quora, where writers ‘guarantee’ BTC will rise to $25,000+.
Yesterday, I talked to someone who purchased 1 BTC, at ~$12,500. He excitedly revealed that he had earned a 25% return within 24 hours, as BTC rose to $16,500. I interrupted to ask what had prompted him to buy BTC in the first place. His only response was that he saw the pattern of BTC’s growth and didn’t believe the profits would end anytime soon.
My friend is normally a rational, intelligent person, whose opinions I seek and respect. As such, I was astounded to hear his speculation was based solely on a hunch.
My response was simple. I showed him a chart of an even bigger growth stock than BTC, at the height of the tech bubble in 2000. At the height of its powers, Cisco was the largest company in the world. Like Bitcoin, for over a decade the stock had been exponentially rising, posting a 265,100% return between IPO and peak price.
But then the party stopped and the bubble burst. From 2000–2002, Cisco lost 88% of its value. The stock never fully recovered, and still lingers as a shadow of its former formidable self.
Cisco isn’t an isolated example. History is filled with examples of ‘the next best thing’ with an astounding growth record but without the fundamentals to back up these crazy valuations. Tulipmania, the South Sea company and the Mississippi company are just some of these precedents.
I then asked another simple question, to forget about the share price, and to imagine he could never sell the stock on an exchange. If he had to buy BTC at $16,500 and could never sell it on any exchange, would he be happy to hold BTC, as an investment which he could only use as a currency in shops, as he would the Euro or the US dollar? Would he be happy to use BTC for its intended purpose, not just to make a quick profit.
I invite you to ask yourself the same question. BTC is currently worth a collective $267 billion. Do you believe that BTC could buy $267 billion worth of items, either online or in brick and mortar stores?
You may strongly believe BTC will become accepted as a fiat currency, but even then what makes you believe each BTC will be worth more than it is today?
Is it not already priced into the market?
Considering the lack of assets or government guarantor to act as collateral, why is BTC worth more than the paper clip on my desk?
These are all questions you have to ask before purchasing BTC. We’re in the middle of a 9 year bull market, the 2nd longest in history. Markets have been rising so long, they’ve all but forgotten the possibility of a crash. People are buying a ticker, without any consideration for the underlying asset.
Ultimately, BTC is at its current price because no-one is certain it will go up or down. I believe it's grossly overvalued, and the underlying asset doesn't deserve a value of $267 billion. That's why I can't recommend investing in BTC.

Hi everybody, my name is Joanes Espanol and I am co-founder and CTO of Amberdata.   1. What type of data does the API provide?
The advantage and uniqueness of Amberdata’s API is the combination of blockchain and pricing data together in one API call.

  1. Why is it important to combine blockchain and market data?
Cryptoeconomics plays a key role in the blockchain world. One simple way to explain this is to look at why peer-to-peer file sharing systems like BitTorrent failed. These file sharing protocols were an early form of decentralization, with each node contributing to and participating in this “global sharing computer”. The issue with these protocols is that they relied on the good will of each participant to (re-)share their files - but without economic incentive, or punishment for not following the rules, it opened the door to bad behavior which ultimately led to its demise.
The genius of Satoshi Nakamoto was to combine and improve upon existing decentralized protocols with game theory, to arrive at a consensus protocol able to circumvent the Byzatine’s General Problem. Now participants have incentives to follow the rules (they get financially rewarded for doing so by mining for example, and penalized for misbehaving), which in turn results in a stable system. This was the first time that crypto-economics were used in a working product and this became the base and norm for a lot of the new systems today.
Pricing data is needed as context to blockchain data: there are a lot of (ERC-20) tokens created on Ethereum - it is very easy to clone an existing contract, and configure it with a certain amount of initial tokens (most commonly in the millions and billions in volume). Each token has an intrinsic value, as determined by the law of supply and demand, and as traded on the exchanges. Price fluctuations have an impact on the adoption and usage, meaning on the overall transaction volume (and to a certain extent transaction throughput) on the blockchain.
Blockchain data is needed as context to market data: activity on blockchain can have an impact on market data. For example, one can look at the incoming token transfers in the Ethereum transaction pool and see if there are any impending big transfers for a specific token, which could result in a significant price move on the other end. Being able to detect that kind of movement and act upon it is the kind of signals that traders are looking for. Another example can be found with token supplies: exchanges want to be notified as soon as possible when a token circulating supply changes, as it affects their trading ability, and in the worst case scenario, they would need to halt trading if a token contract gets compromised.
In conclusion, events on the blockchain can influence price, and market events also have an impact on blockchain data: the two are intimately intertwined, and putting them both in context leads to better insights and better decision making.
  1. All the data you provide is publicly available, what gives?
Very true, all this data is publicly available, that is one of the premises and fundamentals of blockchain models, where all the data is public and transparent across all the nodes of the network. The problem is that, even though it is publicly available, it is not quick, not easy and not cheap to access.
Not quick: blockchain data structures were designed and optimized for achieving consensus in a hostile and trustless environment and for internal state management, not for random access and overall search. Imagine you want to list all the transactions that your wallet address has participated in? The only way to do that would be to replay all the transactions from the beginning of time (starting at the genesis block), looking at the to and from addresses and retain only the ones matching your wallet: at over 500 million of transactions as of today, it will take some unacceptable amount of time to retrieve that list for a customer facing application.
Not easy: Some very basic things that one would expect when dealing with financial assets and instruments are actually very difficult to get at, especially when related to tokens. For example, the current Ether balance of a wallet is easy to retrieve in one call to a Geth or Parity client - however, looking at time series of these balances starts to be a little hairy, as not all historical state is kept by these clients, unless you are running a full archive node. Looking at token holdings and balances gets even more complicated, as most of the token transfers are part of the transient state and not kept on chain. Moreover, token transfers and balance changes over time are triggered by different mechanisms (especially when dealing with contract to contract function calls), and detecting these changes accurately is prone to errors.
Not cheap: As mentioned above, most of the historical data and time series metrics are only available via a full archive node, which at the time of writing requires about 3TB of disk space, just to hold all the blockchain state - and remember, this state is in a compressed and not easily accessible format. To convert it to a more searchable format requires much more space. Also, running your own full archive node requires constant care, maintenance and monitoring, which has become very expensive and prohibitive to run.
  1. Who uses your API today and what do they do with it?
A wide variety of applications and projects are using our API, across different industries ranging from wallets and trust funds (DappRadar), to accounting and arbitrage firms (Moremath), including analytics (Stratcoins) and compliance & security companies (Blue Swan). Amberdata’s API is attractive to many different people because it is very complete and fast, and it provides additional data enrichment not available in other APIs, and because of these, it appeals to and fits nicely with our customers use cases:

  1. Amberdata recently made some headlines for discovering a vulnerability on Parity client. Can you tell us a bit more about it?
This is an interesting one. One of our internal processes flagged a contract, and more specifically the balanceOf(...) call: it was/is taking more than 5 seconds to execute (while typically this call takes only a few milliseconds). While investigating further, we started looking at the debug traces for that contract call and were pretty surprised when a combination of trace_call+vmTrace crashed our Parity node - and not just randomly, the same call would exhibit the exact same behavior each time, and on different Parity nodes. It turns out that this contract is very poorly written, and the implementation of balanceOf(...) keeps on looping over all the holders of the token, which eventually runs out of memory.
Even though this is a pretty severe bug (any/all Parity node(s) can be remotely shutdown with just one small call to its API), in practice the number of nodes at risk is probably small because only operators who have enabled public facing RPC calls (and possibly the ones who have enabled tracing as well) are affected - which are both disabled by default. Kudos to the Parity team for fixing and releasing a patch in less than 24 hours after the bug was reported!

The blockchain and crypto market is one of the fastest evolving and innovating markets ever, and a very fast paced environment. Having been heads down for two years now, it is sometimes easy to lose sight of the big picture. The journey has been long, but I am happy and proud to see it all come together: we started with blockchain data and monitoring/alerting, added search, validation and derived data (tokens, supplies, etc) along the way, and finally market data to close the loop on all the cryptoeconomics. Seeing the overall engagement from the community around our data is very gratifying: API usage climbing up, more and more pertinent and relevant questions/suggestions on our support channels, other projects like Kadena sending us their own blockchain data so it can be included in Amberdata’s offering… all of these makes me want to do more :)

---Who are your competitors? What makes you better?
There are a few data providers out there offering similar information as Amberdata. For example, Etherscan has very complete blockchain data for Ethereum, and CoinmarketCap has assets rankings by market cap and some pricing information. What makes Amberdata unique is three folds:
· Combination of blockchain and market data: typically other providers offer one or the other, but not both, and not integrated with each other - with Amberdata, in one API call I can get blockchain and historically accurate pricing data at the same time. We have also standardized access across multiple blockchains, so you get one interface for all and do not have to worry about understanding each and every one of them.
· Validated & verifiable data: we work hard to preserve transparency and trust and are very open about how our metrics are calculated. For example, blockchain data comes with all the pieces needed to recompute the Mekle proofs so the integrity of the data can be verified at any moment. Why I Am Holding LoMoCoin (LMC) (LoMoStar)

There are so many things I want to say about LoMoCoin/LoMoStar that I'm not sure if I'll be able to cover everything in one post.. Well, unless you want to read 20 pages.. Let's just see where this article takes us and go from there.. In order to understand why LoMoCoin is undervalued you must understand the market it's targeting.. In fact this is a difficult post to write because there is so much to cover, but I will do my best..
'Incentivized shopping' is a big deal in Asia.. In China, if you wanted a coupon for Burger King you simply open WeChat, follow burger king and within seconds you have access to coupons. This has been so ingrained in society that nearly every reputable business now has a WeChat account. On top of that, many businesses offer VIP cards or VIP memberships which gives you additional deals on your future visits.. When it comes to offline shopping, the creative battle to get people in the door is becoming ever more prevalent.
To see how LoMoCoin plays in the big picture we'll start with explaining the LoMoCoin (LMC) Blockchain and then we will follow up with the primary application, LoMoStar (the star of the show). In the end I hope those who read this can understand the scale of this project and don't under-estimate what we're dealing with here. In my opinion this asset has been undervalued for far too long and I believe its presence will be well known in the future.
About LoMoCoin (LMC)
"The built-in LoMoCoin (LMC) of LoMoStar is similar to Bitcoin, which is a cryptocurrency with real value based on our own blockchain technology. Compared with traditional cryptocurrencies, LMC inherits the advantages of the related currencies which includes that the total amount is limited and cannot be over-issued."
LoMoCoin is it's own blockchain and the consensus mechanism is Proof of Stake (PoS). Instead of a fixed interest rate like most currencies, LMC uses the coin age as a means to take part in the consensus process. The LMC blockchain supports cold staking. Functions such as a single private key address and multi-sig address are supported. It is also mentioned in the whitepaper that smart contracts will be integrated in the near future.
Now I know this stuff may sound like technical mumbo jumbo to you, but its important to know and well get to the more exciting stuff soon here.. In the meantime let's look at the LMC Blockchain.
The LMC Blockchain
The LoMoCoin (LMC) blockchain can be divided into 5 levels from a technical point of view.. (See whitepaper for full details.)
So think of it like LoMoCoin is the decentralized framework for the LoMoStar ecosystem.. (LoMoCoin was rebranded to LoMoStar in v2.0) So now that we have covered the technical details of LoMoCoin (LMC) let's take a look at the LoMoStar app..
What is LoMoStar?
LoMoStar is the main primary application built on the LMC blockchain (available on Android and iOS). When your talking about LoMoStar it's more then just getting discounts at local shops and collecting crypto on a map.. LoMoStar is a vast social ecosystem that evolves around people-to-people, people-to-asset, and people-to-organization (and vice versa). The vision set forward by the CEO 'Xiong Lijian' has been overlooked by nearly every investor.. (I say nearly because there's only a handful of people who actually research with an optimistic outlook on blockchain technology long term..) So before I begin, I would like to applaud the CEO Xiong Lijian for taking on a massive project which I believe will turn many people's dreams into a reality.
LoMoStar - Social Events Platform with Cryptocurrency
"LoMoStar will integrate ones geographical position with its virtual environment and will use cryptocurrencies as its social medium to introduce new forms of relationships with one another. Also, by allowing for global (group) interactions, LoMoStar will facilitate international social relationships. In addition, people can develop business relationships at LoMoStar to enhance the influence of individuals, increase brand awareness, and/or improve business development."
For example, in the LoMoStar app, I can geographically drop a red envelope that contains any cryptocurrency. Before I drop red envelopes I could include an image and a short message. Anyone who opens this red envelope will be rewarded with cryptocurrency and will automatically join my group. (You can quit a group after 48 hours).
Red Envelopes
"Airdrops of red envelopes, which contain cryptocurrencies, can be organized at certain geographical locations that have a sufficient density of users, for instance cities or popular public locations. Additionally, automated trading between users and investment opportunities will become available and people can use LoMoStar to perform many social related activities, such as marketing activities, group-related activities, organizing events, participating in treasure hunts, digital investments, and more. All these features enable LoMoStar to become a unique social and economic platform. The establishment of these social relationships and global interactions can fulfill both individual, group and corporate interests and desires, forming a win-win or multi-win situation."
For example, let's say there is a sporting event like the Super Bowl where a large gathering of people will attend. A corporation could Airdrop red envelopes specifically to this geographical location for sports fans to pick up. Or let's say a local festival wants more attendance they can arrange an airdrop at the festivals location. You can pretty much target any area that contains a sufficient density of users.
Users will use their own ingenuity to create new forms of social entertainment. (As outlined below in the whitepaper)
Peer-to-peer Cryptocurrency Trading
" LoMoStar supports using any cryptocurrency to conduct trading, whether it is for physical goods, services or digital assets. LoMoStars underlying technology will therefore enable peer-to-peer trading with one another."
The plan is to support any cryptocurrency to exchange for physical goods, services or digital assets. (LoMoStar hand selects and reviews each supported coin.) In addition LoMoStar allows messaging between users and groups with the ability to send/drop red envelopes.
Digital assets based on Location-based System (LBS)
"Through LoMoStar, people can also invest in many real-world businesses on certain geographical locations, such as retail, real estate, attractions, and more. LoMoStar will allow users to utilize cryptocurrency for investing in retail, real estate, attractions and other various immovable properties in order to gain profits."
This is a very ambitious vision and I like it... The thought of being able to invest in real-world businesses and assets using crypto is music to my ears. Let's look into this a little more and highlight some things from the whitepaper..
"By connecting users to each other in the virtual world and then to assets in the real world, LoMoStar creates a novel setting where unpredictable social and economic relationships can spontaneously flourish within user-created scenarios. This will promote the use of cryptocurrencies in the real world and allow completely new ecological models and scenarios to emerge."
Here is an example noted from the white paper.
"Taking the vending machines as an example, which is one of the most common automatic trading devices, the holder can divide the income rights of a predetermined period and then launch the installation address of the device on the LoMoStar map. The (1) the product service description, (2) investment price of the income rights after division, (3) income distribution overview, and (4) other related information will then also be given. There are other types of devices that work similarly as a vending machine (e.g. self- service photo machine, self-service massage chair, and/or a doll machine) that can be used as a similar example. If LoMoStar users are interested, they can use cryptocurrency to invest and purchase the rights of these devices on the virtual map and thereby allow the possibility to generate an income from their (virtual) investments."
So now you can see, LoMoStar is not 'Just a game where you pick up cryptocurrency on a map'. LoMoStar aims to promote the use of cryptocurrency in the real world by acting as a bridge connecting the two worlds - ultimately revealing the true value of cryptocurrency.

When we look at the team, it is truly an impressive force that delivers results. Building a new social ecosystem requires engineers in all fronts. From developing blockchain technology to F5 Lab to the LoMoStar app for android and ios. Let's also not forget xStar.io the Digital Assets Exchange aimed to strengthen the LoMoStar ecosystem. The team is building all the essential components needed to improve asset liquidity and long-term asset stability.. the bottom line here is.. the team is quite large and well organized.
Last year in an interview with the LoMoStar CEO Xiong Lijian, he mentioned they had more than 30 people on the team.
"LoMoCoin’s core team has been working together since 2013 and has experienced the mining and trading of Bitcoin and Litecoin in the early days. We are also one of the first teams in China that begun R&D application and development of blockchain technology. What kind of advantages will LMC have within the application in comparison to BTC/ETH/LTC, etc.? This is still unclear.
This can, for instance, be when ICO projects are promoted and only LMC holders will be able to participate. More than 10 projects have recently already discovered the value of LoMoStar and hope to promote and even accept LMC as an investment. We choose projects very selectively and they are still under review.
Can you tell us how XStar will help with the growth of LMC?
XStar is a trading platform that I and some other friends in the Chinese community have set up, not only to provide liquidity to LMC, but also because we are optimistic about the future of the blockchain industry. LoMoStar and XStar will be mutually reinforcing each other. Moreover, XStar is a trading platform that will provide a different and larger trading experience, which is not exactly the same as that of LoMoStar. This is what we have discovered in the Chinese market. Also, from a perspective of marketing theory, different needs of user groups can be mutually relocated. Therefore, LoMoStar and XStar may adopt different approaches and strategies when they are promoted in various countries. In any case, if LoMoStar first enters a country, it can help XStar; if XStar first enters a country, likewise, it can in turn help LoMoStar.
Do you think your marketing budget is enough to cover all your future plans (e.g. exchange costs, hiring foreign specialists etc.)?
Our company has a healthy financial position and we are fairly certain that it is enough to support our marketing efforts. We will also use our budget to participate in conferences and events all around the globe.
Are you going to integrate Augmented Reality (AR) features? And if so, does the current app functionality allow for it?
We have a well connected partner that we have a good relationship with, as their founder used to develop mining machines with our CEO. This enterprise is experienced in developing chips and advanced AR techniques. In the future, sooner or later, AR will be adopted in any location-based system (LBS) application. Inside our firm we are always talking about AR and we believe that when the AR techniques and implementation possibilities get improved we will certainly adopt it in LoMoStar.
How will you protect LoMoCoin (LMC) investors and increase the interest of using LMC inside of the app, since you have also added other currencies such as Ethereum and Bitcoin?
A key feature of a currency is security and liquidity, which will also affect LMC. We will add more digital currencies in the future. Global users and transaction volume will be increased this way. Additionally, when you run a club and have a lot of guests invited. There will be social demand for every guest. Nevertheless, you as the host will almost always get prioritized in the long-term by all of these guests.
Can you tell us about the F5 lab? How many full-time employees are there? Is it a subsidary of LoMoStar or is it an independent research lab? What are they working on now?
F5 Labs is a professional technology collaboration, and the technology we develop and share inside is more ‘professional’ and complex than that of the general programmer community. It will be focusing on B2B relationship initially.
How will you ensure exclusivity for LMC within the LoMoStar app? What will ensure the app will use LMC?
There is no doubt that many exclusive features will be implemented in the future within the app where you must use LoMoCoin to complete.
How will iBeacon/IoT be implemented? Will it be implemented onto the LMC chain?
We are very interested and involved in the development of the Internet of Things. Our CEO next week will also visit the Lenovo Group training session as they are looking for solutions that is combining blockchain technology and the Internet of Things. I think everyone may have heard of the Lenovo Group, they acquired IBM personal computer business in the past.
What is your future plan to attract more investments?
From the scope of my responsibility, I am more concerned about the ecological construction of LoMoStar. Overall when it comes to marketing, it is something that money can solve. Moreover, we have always kept in touch with prominent exchanges and we have made some progress here. We will inform you when we are able to confirm more.
